After that, the application and licensing process will begin. The next step towards launch of sports betting in Maryland is approval of the regulations by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Commission, which is tentatively scheduled for July 15, 2021.
In May, Governor Larry Hogan signed HB940. Maryland legislators followed this up with legislation to carry out voters’ wishes and introduce and regulate sports betting. In November 2020, voters passed a referendum by a margin of more than 2-1 in favor of expanded gaming, to allow for sports betting in the state. The process by which Maryland will be the last mid-Atlantic state to legalize sports betting is well under way.
